GRRM recently quoted as saying the Direwolves were a "Chekhov's gun" and that he had big plans for them in the remainder of a story.

This theory has added legs... Wolf legs!

aaaaand (from TWOAIF) smells like foreshadowing:

"...of the night in the White Wood,where supposedly the children of the forest emerged from beneath a hollow hill to send hundreds of wolves against an Andal camp, tearing hundreds of men apart beneath the light of a crescent moon"

The "hollow hill" here could be where the outlaws have their hideout, given all the weirwoods and proximity to High Heart, it's a strong guess.

As a counter point I'd argue that to interestingly use the wolves you'd need a warg. As that would be kinda the difference between someone firing Chekovs wolf and deus ex wolvinus appearing to rescue edmure/to just kill everyone!

And at this point since neither Bran nor Arya have ever met (or heard of) Edmure/Blackfish/Jeyne it seems unlikely that they'd be able to understand the situation Nymeria's eyes.

That might be a very good counter-point.

However, I'm not sure that Bran wouldn't at least be able to recognize Freys and Lannisters, whom he knows are responsible for the death of most of his family. He might not understand the situation, but he would recognize mortal enemies and perhaps that's enough.

Another possibility is Arya. She has continued to have wolf dreams even while in Braavos, and she *certainly* wants to kill Freys and Lannisters.

If not, then the wolves will be unleashed at some later point in time... Perhaps vs. the Others.

I always felt like he knew about the Red Wedding because he dreamt about it, and knew Robb and Grey Wind were dead. But I guess the dream might not be detailed enough for him to realize exactly what was going on, and who the villans were.

But yeah, he can always recognize Lannisters and knows they killed his father. The party here in the prologue will likely fly a Lannister banner.
