I agree with McDougal. I think it was more powerful that Jon was sentenced to death more or less by being sent out to assassinate Mance as opposed to him just unilaterally deciding to do it.
My only other complaint was how they usurped command from Janos Slynt at the top of the Wall. One of my favorite moments in all the books was when Noye said, "Jon you have the Wall". I know it couldn't have been Noye, but I had goosebumps when someone trusted him with command. In the show, he just kind of weaseled his way in.
Otherwise, I loved it. Crazy special effects and cool new devices to protect the Wall.
