Casterly Rock

Postby McDougal » Tue Nov 11, 2014 7:19 pm

So I wanted to post a very elongated common swear word hear but figured that would probably break forum policy so I'll say this in stead:

Wow. Just wow, The Lannisters arrogance is really pretty well founded it would seem! This sheds a lot of light on their behavior over the books, be it the disdain they show for Winterfell or the famous line "By what right does the wold judge the lion". The fact that it's never been sacked and is clearly much older and in such a prosperous location really puts it miles above, The Eyrie, Storms End and Highgarden!

The artwork is amazing, I think anyone who hasn't yet should buy the book just for this!

However I have one nagging question. Did George always envisage it to be so? If it's bigger than the Wall and the Hightower surely we'd have heard about that? Wouldn't Tyrion have compared the Wall and the Rock in his pissing chapter? (Please correct me if we do know this!) Tbh as much as it's really really cool...it does seem a little overkill...I always imagined it to be a castle atop a rock! (No, not the Eyrie!) A larger castle but much closer to the ground! That's a question, why was Tyrion so uncomfortable in the Eyrie, surely he would have been used to high places? It seems George (or Elio+Linda) could be making up for the lack of Rock 'pagetime' by really going super-size.

Still overall very nice artwork and concept
Please feel free to disagree!

I think the notion that it is "bigger" than those places is a bit misleading. It is basically a mountain that has slowly been turned into a castle via the carving out of tunnels and such, whereas the Eyrie and the Wall are fully constructed on their own, instead of built out of something that was already there.

That said, it is a completely awesome castle, and I am excited to see it. We're supposedly going to have at least a POV chapter or two there in the next book, according to George.

I too was very impressed by the artwork of the Rock, even if it's depicted a little grander than intended. It certainly makes you really begin to understand why the Westerlands don't get attacked often. Am I getting that you'd need to have a Navy to establish a beach-head in order to attack this place? I'm curious what it looks like from the eastern side as the castle faces the coastal waters.

Dragonstone was equally as impressive I felt, image wise.
Edd, fetch me a block.

GOT is one of the best seasons we have. The art, the presentation is superb specially Casterly rock how beautifully they created it. I can't wait for the next season of Game of thrones. Isn't it great to see dragons fighting.
