Robert's Rebellion

Postby LawHawk » Mon Apr 28, 2014 8:27 am

I would love to hear your complete history of Robert's Rebellion. We have so much information about it because so many characters were either involved or talk about it with others who were. Which houses were on each side, and how/why did they end up on that side? We all say the "cause" was Rhaegar running off with Lyanna, and the Stark executions... were there other causes? What were the great battles? Was it always known that Robert would be the king, or were there other candidates? What was House Lannister doing while it was "neutral," and what would have happened to the Lannisters if the Targaryens had won? Besides the obvious crowning of King Robert, what were the other results of the war? As of the start of Game of Thrones, are there any major players who truly are secretly drinking toasts to Viserys' health and sewing dragon banners?

I definitely want us to do this topic in great detail, but I expect we'll learn some things from World of Ice and Fire, even if the book is billed as "a gift to Robert Baratheon". I am thinking it was written after his reign, but if we can confirm that it was not... then there's no reason to wait and we can do it anytime. Which might as well be this year.

I would love that too. I tried looking up a chronology of the events leading to Robert's rebellion and some were very confusing.

This would certainly be a great topic. Jumping off of the previous suggestion, who else could have been king after the rebellion? Was Ned ever considered in becoming king, either way how do you think he would have done as king (we knew he wasn't a good Hand but being King is different). Also, at the time the rebellion was taking place was it called Robert's Rebellion, or was it named that afterward?

^ Jumping off the back of this, I reckon that if Ned deemed one of the heirs to the other Great Houses as more eligible of being King than himself, he would probably have named them King and someone else (quite possibly himself) as regent (even Edmure, haha!). If all those major lords had died as you suggest, then he probably did have a very decent claim to the throne; however, if he reckoned that someone else's claim was greater then it's definitely not in his nature to challenge that for his own gain. So maybe he would have yielded the throne to the Lannisters? It's quite an interesting theoretical debate that I hadn't thought about before...

Interesting topic.

Along these lines, something I've always wondered: If Targ blood and bloodlines really was what legitimizes one's claim to the throne, who outside of House Targaryen would have had the strongest claim at the time of Robert's Rebellion?

There's Targ blood all over the place, and I'm obviously not just assuming it's Robert - his Targ lineage made for a handy pretense for his ascension to the throne, but no one couldn't really say it was reason for it.

I note how the locations for the Battles in Robert's Rebellion Compare to the Battles in the War of 5 Kings:
A. Stormlands - Robert fights three battles in one day at Summerhall: Stannis & Renly are set to battle at Bitterbridge before Stannis's Shaddow slays Renly.
B. Riverlands - Ned & Jon Arryn surprise Jon Connington's forces at Stoney Sept, saving Robert: Robb's forces surprise the Lannisters at Whispering Wood, capturing Jaime. Baratheon forces prevent Targaryan forces from crossing the Trident, culminating in Robert slaying Rhaegar in single combat. After Lannister efforts to ford Trident are year twarted by Tulley Forces, Tywin abandons efforts and moves forces to King's Landing.
C. Crownlands - Lannisters sack King's Landing after gaining entrance through false intentions: Stannis Baratheon's forces surprised by Lannister & Tyrell forces attack in the rear. If Tywin had insisted on fording the Trident, he would have been held in the Riverlands by Robb Stark, which would have let Stannis take King's Landing.
