SDCC Prologue Spoiler

Postby Azizal » Fri Jul 25, 2014 5:45 pm

GRRM said:

"Jeyne Westerling, Robb's book-wife, will be seen in the prologue of The Winds of Winter, these are two different worlds."

Last seen, Jeyne was escorted by 400 Lannisters including some expert picked longbowmen told to kill Edmure if he runs. Yes, Edmure Tully. He is also with Jeyne and Sybelle. They were to stop at Casterly Rock on their way to the Crag. Edmure would be left at Casterly Rock.

So it is time to speculate at which point along the journey we'll see the prologue action occur. And which poor fool's POV we see breath their last...

Blackfish could be involved in this chapter, given this might be a rescue attempt of Edmure.

400 is a lot for the BwB to deal with though, even if Blackfish is leading them or part of the group.

When Edmure and the Westerlings departed, four hundred men rode with them; Jaime had doubled the escort again at the last moment. He rode with them a few miles, to talk with Ser Forley Prester. Though he bore a bull’s head upon his surcoat and horns upon his helm, Ser Forley could not have been less bovine. He was a short, spare, hard-bitten man. With his pinched nose, bald pate, and grizzled brown beard, he looked more like an innkeep than a knight. “We don’t know where the Blackfish is,” Jaime reminded him, “but if he can cut Edmure free, he will.”
“That will not happen, my lord.” Like most innkeeps, Ser Forley was no man’s fool. “Scouts and outriders will screen our march, and we’ll fortify our camps by night. I have picked ten men to stay with Tully day and night, my best longbowmen. If he should ride so much as a foot off the road, they will loose so many shafts at him that his own mother would take him for a goose.”
“Good.” Jaime would as lief have Tully reach Casterly Rock safely, but better dead than fled. “Best keep some archers near Lord Westerling’s daughter as well.”
Ser Forley seemed taken aback. “Gawen’s girl? She’s—”
“—the Young Wolf’s widow,” Jaime finished, “and twice as dangerous as Edmure if she were ever to escape us.”
“As you say, my lord. She will be watched.”

Well, the previous prologues were:

Northern ranger POV
Southern maester POV
Northern (Fist of the First Men) POV,
Southern studying-to-be-a-maester POV,
Northern Varamyr POV

And now a southern POV with Jeyne Westerling in it, maintaining the pattern. Possibly a maester?

I vaguely remember a comment from GRRM (it's probably in an SSM) stating we'd eventually see Casterly Rock. This could be that opportunity!

We've also learned that apparently GRRM wrote the Feast prologue from several different POV's before settling on Pate. That seems to indicate there was never a maester "pattern". Though the North/South pattern certainly seems to be maintaining.

This is kinda thin, but magic features fairly prominently in all the prologues too.

Game - intro the Others
Clash - intro Melisandre (resistance/immune to poison) and the comet
Storm - Others again (we don't actually see them, or the wights though)
Feast - the Alchemist/Jaqen, glass candles discussion
Dance - Warg and 2nd life stuff

Looking at that typed out it doesn't seem that strong of an idea, but worth mentioning I guess. If Stoneheart were involved, that would be somewhat magical. But I don't know that the timeline would work for that given Jaime's timeline. Then again, by the end of Dance, Kevan and court are aware that Jaime has disappeared in the Riverlands. So maybe it could fit.

Aa semi-crackpot idea I've seen is Nymeria's wolfpack getting involved somehow (not at Casterly Rock, obv heh).

I'd like to think that the main theme introduce in the prologue of wow is the Others. Quite unlikely since they - the retinue leaded by Forley Prester- are on the road to casterly rock, but remember that winter has indeed come to linger all over Westeros for a long, long, long while, and it would take all of us readers aback. Personally Id love it.
And about the prologue POV, indeed it's not of high relevance since all of them becomes dead quite soon. It'd be awesome to read a quarrel between the Lannister men-at-arms and some group of brothers without banners and then just one or two or however many of Others you want. I don't see Nymeria on all of this since the Mercy references about the wolf dream with pines, but all the same it could be possile too that on top of the.hills the pines also grow up. But they are likelier on higher spots I think.
I dont know why, but if the POV is someone we already know, i'd put my money on Sybelle Spicer. I dont see why Martin would need a maester to explain the thing about the potions Jeyne took due to not breeding, since he has Sybelle, the daughter of a woods witch came from Asshai, who probably has one or two skills about potions and magics. And besides it'd break some patterns: the maester pattern and the male POV pattern, but all the same we could get a bunch of power links about the west and Asshai'i magics info that could be even related somehow with the Others. Much of speculation here, I know, but it's the best i can guess.
PD1: my greetins to all of you, old guys and new, since it's been a lot of time with no post from me.
PD2: It's a bit offtopic, but yesterday when I read the chapter Azizal quoted above, I took notice that Ser Karyl Vance could be working with the BwB, cause he's the first to suggest Jaime to go to Raventree, ending it all up with Jaime in Pennytree, closely spoted, and with his feet set on the Lady Stoneheart's trap. What ya think?
We're all part of this Song. Martin, nor your Song neiter you will ever die.
